World Events
soconfuse asked:

I need some ideas about current world event. My teacher told me to connect one of the current world event to one of the concepts in the book farenheit 451.

Like in Far. 451, one of the concepts is about censorship, I can relate this to the event in Haiti or whatever place it is where the press is only allowed to say what the country wants it to say.

Listen, these topics are the easiest to address when you believe in yourself in some way. Roe example, if you believe in free speech then you can discuss the freedoms of one country or another based on the qualities of speech.

In Saudi Arabia the whole internet is filtered at King Abdul Aziz University in Jeddah. There are satellite dishes that get internet contact unfiltered. But only the rich can afford free access. And just because someone has access they don’t have free speech.

The internet is one of the most open platforms for free speech, however, in many countries the internet is censored to prevent access to news which may be deemed controversial. For instance, the Chinese government (aided by Google and other web giants) censors American and pro-American news.

Fahrenheit 451 itself was censored at one point when published in a school text book (to omit swearing). (I can’t source this, I think I read about it in an interview with Bradbury, so don’t take my word for it.)

On a more personal note, this is one of my favorite novels :)
