I would consider the invention of the printing press, the creation of the U.S., and the test of the first atomic bomb important.

Natalie,
this is very good question; however, one that may draw a varied amount of responses. So, in keeping with your question I will answer this based on an American perspective. I answer this full well and knowing that there were many events prior to my list of three, during and in between my list of three, and many other events that occurred after that cannot fully cover the gamut of what your question can fulfill.
1. The American Revolution
2. The American Civil War
3. World War II
These three events in modern times arguably are the most important for the formation, continuation, and international impact we have had on the world as a whole. Feel free to disagree - this is merely my objective response to your sincere question.
