Wow… I used to love doing projects like that and I would really like to help you out but I’m a bit busy at the moment … if you go onto Wikipedia and just search each year it will give you a day-to-day list of important world wide events. My suggestion is to pick the biggest that defines the year and then also maybe what happened on your birthday or another important day for you (if it is interesting).

A couple of big events that spring to mind are :
1994 South Africa’s first democratic elections
    1995: Oklahoma city bombing
1997: Madeleine Albright becomes the first female Secretary of State.
    1999: Big panic over Y2K
    2001: WTC attacks in NY
    2004: Tsunami
    2005:Katrina, London bombings
    2006: Saddam Hussein executed
    2007: Greek and California wildfires
    2008: NY governor Spitzer scandal

Sorry I can’t think of more right now. Good luck! I’m sure you will find it interesting when you get started.
