What are some world events or people that effect the world?

I need to do a project on some type of world event/person that effects the whole world. Examples I have are global warming, Lance Armstrong (his cancer foundation)… i want some more examples… i don’t want to do it on global warming because it’s too common of a subject, but on something interesting.. is there any world event or person that effects the world??? it can be a person or thing… it just basically has to effect the world in some way.
