In roughly chronological order -
The discovery of fire.
The domestication of the horse.
The invention of writing.
The invention of the wheel.
The day the first man looked at the world, scratched his head and said, “I wonder how it all works….”

I think the five are: the Russian Revolution and the execution of Tsar Nicolas and his wife Alexandra, the French Revolution and the execution of Marie Antoinette and her weak husband, the World War I, and the World War II, and the Civil War. There are many other wars but these are the top five with long lasting effects.

1) The development and improvement of farming: This is #1, no matter what, with out improved farming we would be spending most of our time in the fields trying to produce food for ourselves.
2) Invention of the steam engine, this allowed trains, and ships to move supplies, goods, food, etc faster and further than ever before. On ships it meant shorter travel times, and ships were no longer dependent on the wind.
3) Invention of powered flight, again it cut travel times, revolutionized warfare, and gave birth to space travel, and satellites which are essential to today’s world, including cell phones and the Internet.
4) The US Civil War, this war generally gets bypassed by many historians who simply get bogged down with slavery. The war actually was one of the first modern total wars, and, if anyone actually payed attention, showed what would happen when WW1 broke out (trench warfare). Many lessons from this war were not learned because it was considered an isolated event by many in Europe at the time.
5) The writing of the US Constitution, truly a great document forging the US government. It forged a strong government, yet one that can change, bend and be amended to flow with the times.
