Off the top of my head:

    Napoleon’s defeat at Waterloo: 1815

    Civil War: 1861-1865

Unification of Germany and Italy: 1871

1811 - After the death of his favorite daughter Amelia, George III of Britain goes insane, and Parliament appoints the Prince of Wales as Prince Regent.
1812- Napoleon invades Russia and reaches Moscow after the horrific Battle of Borodino; he torches the city but is soon forced to retreat and then flee. War, hunger, and cold kill all but 20,000 of the 550,000 soldiers in his Grande Army.
1815- Napoleon returns to France from exile to rule for 100 Days. He is defeated at Waterloo by British, Dutch, and German troops and is exiled to St. Helena in the South Atlantic. He will die there six years later.
1826- French scientist J.N. Niepce produces the first permanent photograph.
1836 - Battle of Alamo and Texas Independence
    1846 - Mexican War
1856 - The Crimean War comes to an end. Russia yields, and all powers promise to fully respect the territorial integrity of the Ottoman Empire.
1861 - Civil War | Civil War Battles and Events Interactive
    1867 - Alaska Purchase
1876 - The Invention of the Telephone
1878 - The Invention of the Light Bulb
1880 - Russian novelist Fyodor Dostoyevsky publishes The Brothers Karamazov a year before he dies.
1881- Czar Alexander II is assassinated by a bomb in St. Petersburg, Russia, in a terrorist bomb attack carried out by radical nihilists. His son, Alexander III, succeeds him, and makes Russian Jews the scapegoat for his father’s murder. He vows to kill one-third of Russia’s Jews, drive out one-third, and convert the remaining third, setting off a wave of pogroms in addition to intensified political repression.
1882 - Children’s classic Pinocchio comes to life from the pen of Italian author Carlo Collodi.

I would choose the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 because it led to a major change in the map of Europe as the agreements reached by the Congress of Vienna (also 1815) were implemented. You can look both of these up for details. Europe was the most important continent in the world throughout the 1800’s since European nations would come to dominate the globe through advances in military technology.

A second world event of significance for all people would be the invention of the telephone in 1876 changing communications from then on.

You might also use the invention of the machine gun by Hiram Maxim about the time of Longfellow’s death, but that is more of a black mark in the history of the period.

Another VERY significant, yet little known, advance was being formulated about the time of Longfellow’s death in Germany by Dr. Robert Koch. Koch’s postulates are four criteria designed to establish a causal relationship between a causative microbe and a disease. The number one cause of death for humans over thousands of years had been microbial diseases. This was the first time doctors had clearly established the causal relationship of microbes with diseases. This was much more important than the telephone or any of the battles and wars between men. The war against microbes has always killed more of us than weapons and hostility. - - worth reading.

If you want to venture to China, you could use the Taiping Rebellion of ~ 1850 to 1864 which cost at least 20 million lives - far more than our American Civil War.
