George HW Bush was inaguarated, We invaded Panama to overthrow Manuel Noreiga, Music was very diverse from Debbie Gibson to Metallica with “One”. The Valdeiz gas tanker accident in Alaska occured. The fall of the Belin Wall and communism in Eastern Europe. Also Tiennamen Square in China with the Pro-Democracy movement. I hope this helps.

The opening of the Berlin Wall, which separated Communist East Berlin from West Berlin which was more or less (though not technically in law) part of West Germany, was the most significant world event of 1989. This took place on Nov 9th.
The Soviet Union, led by Mikhail Gorbachev, reversed its policy of interfering in or controlling the affairs of its East European Communist allies. This soon led to peaceful revolutions in all these countries, several in 1989, with the exception of Romania where a violent revolution toppled the dictator Nicolae Ceausescu. This in turn led to the break-up of the Soviet Union into its 15 constituent republics in 1991.
By the way, this is history, not trivia. Nothing trivial about it!
