What makes you feel safe in light of recent world events (natural disasters, wars, terrorism, etc)?

World Events
Caleb Larsen asked:

I would like to find out what makes people feel most safe, or what elements of safety are most important to people. Would the threat of a hurricane over weigh the threat of a terrorist attack? Would you trade a complete lack of natural disasters for a more hostile climate?

What makes me feel safe is the knowledge that God is in control of everything. That even when it seems like disaster and uncertainty is all around me, I believe that everything, even the painful things are part of God’s plan. I trust that when I do suffer, God is going to use that suffering to build my character and teach me how to help others that are suffering the same thing.

I also believe I won’t die until I have accomplished everything on Earth that God wants me to accomplish & the time is right, and then I will be with him in heaven.

I live in an area where hurricanes are common. You just get used to it. Information and knowledge are the keys to feeling safe. I know what to do if/when there is a hurricane. Or pretty much any natural disaster, for that matter.

War and terrorism are, of course, less of an anticipated subject and not as uniform as natural disasters. And they don’t have any set steps which put you in control of the situation and lead to safety.

And to answer your last question, no. Better the devil I know, than the devil I don’t. Information and experience are what makes a person feel “safe.”

I’d rather have the natural disasters…at least there is some scientific, rational explanation behind those. Terrorism, random murder, abuse; that stuff makes no sense to me. I’d rather buckle down and ride out the storm…as opposed to constantly living in fear of who’s gonna drop the next bomb.

In answer to your question, I feel safest at my parent’s house…lol…I think it just takes me back to those days when I was a kid and oblivious to anything bad in the world.

Living in the Netherlands makes me feel quite safe. The only natural disaster I can think of is flooding, but I can always move to another part of the country. Also, it’s too insignificant for a large scale terrorist attack. There have been problems with radical Muslims. but only on a small scale. The papers are full of crime, but they just need to sell copies.

If I were to move to the US, I would make sure not to live in Tornado Alley, near the Gulf Coast, and not in areas that get the most earthquakes. And because of possible terrorist threats, I would not live in really big cities. Crime may occur anywhere, so that wouldn’t influence my decision on where to live, although it would probably be suburbia.

I worry about the education my kids get, about the increasing amount of taxes I pay to an inapt government and energy prices. I do not worry on bit about the fear mongers predictions in Washington

What makes me feel safe is that i know i can trust myself and that i can survive in whatever environment gets thrown my way. And if i do happen to be killed off, i rest knowing im either going to live free of my physical body or im going to hang around on the astral plane for a while then reincarnate until i learn how to live free of my body - whatever is in Karma. Hopefully ill be enlightened by that time though, but if im not, then so be it! ill just have to go to the next life round 1347 or so… ive lost count by now
you only live a couple thousand times! live it up while you can, and dont waste a moment of fear. FEAR IS THE MIND KILLER

After 9/11 all I wanted to be around were my friends anf family. I’m sad to say that one of my friends lost his uncle in the Twin Towers, so he came to me for comfort and my family as well. If we ever have another 9/11 again, my family and friends will be my #1 light.

Faith in a power greater than myself, and the knowledge that no matter what happens in the physical realm, no one can touch my soul. (attitude might have something to do with it as well!) It is easy for me to put myself in others shoes, which helps me to have compassion. I wish more people could/would do it. Like the recent fires in California. I imagine how hard it would be to know that fire was coming toward my home, and would inevitably destroy it. But I hope for them and others that they know that what starts out as a terrible situation, might one day have been a blessing in disguise, or at least a learning experience for them. We all have to play our hands (no matter how much they **** sometimes) and figure things out for ourselves, but I can’t imagine how moot life would seem without the belief that everything happens for a reason, and that we are all important in the larger scheme of things, and that there is the ultimate wise man looking out for us - GOD.
P.S.What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger!
