The time period was roughly late 18thC to early 19thC - the Civil War in the U.S.and the beginning of the reign of Victoria in England. Try Googling Artists of the Romantic Period.

Romanticism evolved after Neoclassism and before Realism. Basically the first half of the 1800s. Lot of nationalism aspects, particularly in Europe prior to the First World War.

Romanticism was in the early 1800s. Romanticism was a movement that was based on not romance (the term can be misleading), but an artist wanting to get an emotional response. Sometimes these artist would use newspaper stories from the day. This was because of democracy and freedom of the press. Freedom of the press happened because of many things one, being the French Revolution. In their paintings sometimes diagonals are used to convey action, as well as tenebrism. Also in the pictures the human figures have expressive poses.
Five romanticist painters are Theodore Géricault, Francisco Goya, Eugene Delacroix, J. M. W. Turner, and Thomas Cole.
